My son is 4 years old and had his first implant just over a year ago, we have applied for funding to Dorset PCT for bilateral implants, but hey have refused funding. It has now gone to appeal and there is a meeting today 22.04.08, we are now waiting to find out if we have won our appeal.

Mrs Davina Drewett

Hi, I am 38 years old and was very lucky to have a simultaneous bilateral CI operation in Sept 2007 and was switched on at the end of Oct 2007. Originally before I became bilateral, I was a unilateral CI user, in that, in August 2005 I had a CI op in my left ear - the only ear that was stimulated since birth via hearing aid devices. However in June 2006, the CI internal implant failed and was pregnant at the time. Therefore had to wait for a suitable time that it was ok for me and my 3rd and last baby to have a re-implant but was asked if I would like to have my 2nd ear done. Obviously I was stunned, surprised at their suggestion and did accept their offer, hence I'm now a bilateral CI user. I already have my case published on the Deafness Research website, you can read it by clicking here. I also do have a blog of my CI journey.
